Legacy and Heritage

Continuing the relevance of art, Harlem Needle Arts (HNA) curates cultural experiences of the African Diaspora, preserving and expanding the narrative of fiber, textile, design, and needle arts through exhibitions, education, project learning, lectures, film, technical support, economic development and tools to enhance quality of life through art. Transforming the myths of the art forms, our teaching artists are trend setters integrating the use of thread to produce content across platforms that include quilting, felting, knitting, crochet, batik, Adire, botanical print, weaving, spinning, embroidery, collage, illustration, beading and fiber fusion.

For centuries Africans and indigenous people globally have use textile creation through births, rituals and ceremonies. Keeping traditions alive in urban and contemporary settings enables HNA to enhance our communities through cultural identity and learning as well as continue to promote the benefits of rhythmic arts.One's ability to create through the art forms fuses history and art therapy to promote dexterity, palliate the effects of hypertension and arthritis and reduce stress.

  • Workshops with teaching artists represent the African Diaspora sharing heritage and tradition through century old techniques in needle arts and textile creation In Stitches
